Pontifex Avarice (アバリス大神官) is a character in The Legend of Heroes IV: A Tear of Vermillion.

Profile

Avarice is a person who is more interested in self-gain rather than spreading the word of Bardus and helping others. He exploits any opportunity to advance himself in status, even if it means the lives of others. He is friendly towards people of great status such as Parish Priest Zaria and Merchant Garcia. Many consider Avarice selfish and corrupt. Avarice was able to secure the title of Pontifex due to his contributions towards the Church of Bardus. He revitalised the church with his talent to make money.

Avarice has great influence with many aristocrats and members of the Church of Bardus. He lifted the ban on the Meefa hunt and endorsed the hunting of their furs.  After being threatened by Madram, he confessed his plans with the Meefa fur: he plotted to bribe the aristocrats and try to take the place of Supreme Priest Crior.  He is sent to the Valkd Dungeon for interrogation.

After the first encounter with Madram, he becomes fearful for his life and only cares about staying alive rather than trying to bring back his social status and wealth.
